Dog Separation Anxiety –A Quick Fix To Urine-Greeting

Monday, April 9, 2007 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

In order to use a clicker successfully, your dogs mind must be triggered by the sound of the clicker. This is so easy to do and you can literally train your dog to yearn for the sound of the clicker in less than one day. To accomplish this your dog must connect the sound with their favorite treat. That's literally all you have to do.

Dog Separation Anxiety – Here's A Quick Fix To Urine-Greeting

When you come home and greet your dog does he urinate?  When he’s confronted by other people, or other dogs does he sprinkle pee everywhere? I call this “urine-greeting,” because whenever these dogs are greeted by their owners they literally go pee.  It is a behavior characteristic that many dogs display

This behavior should be immediately taken care of. Not just because it can ruin your house and surface areas from frequent urination, but it comes down to a more crucial problem, which is this is a sign of something causing extensive levels of stress and anxiety.  It is your responsibility as a dog owner to alleviate these kinds of behavior symptoms.

Just Ignore Him

When you arrive home the best thing you can do for your dog’s behavioral problem is ignore him.  It may sound cruel, but it is also the fastest way to overcome urine-greeting.  The greeting home is the most typical time that a dog who has these behavioral characteristics tends to pee. This means that there is something going on that causes your dog to get so nervous and worked up when his master is home that he cannot help but spray all over the place.

Just like I said earlier, coming home and walking right by your dog without acknowledging him is going to seem tough. Trust me, I know how difficult this can be because I had to initiate the same protocol for one of my Chihuahuas. But the truth is that your dog will not perceive the experience in the same manner that you see it.  In fact, a certain sense of relief will kick in your dog's mind after only a few minutes of realizing that the standard ritual of greeting and urinating does not have to take place.

Remember, for some reason your dog is feeling that the moment you come home is a very stressful situation and by eradicating the greeting altogether, you have taken away the cause of his anxiety. So keep this in mind as you are attempting to fix his urine-greeting behavior.  As you walk into the house and have to ignore your little pup, always remember that you are helping his condition and not hurting his feelings.
