What Happens When A Dog Goes Through A False Pregnancy?

Wednesday, June 13, 2007 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Are you aware that female dogs can endure a false pregnancy? Now did you know that they may endure this more than even just once but repeatedly? Female dogs are not all the same. Just like people some of them are more nurturing than others. And due to that some may display signs of a false pregnancy even after astral cycle.

What can cause a dog to have a false pregnancy? Researches conclude that it is due to a hormonal imbalance. Female dogs that have this condition on an ongoing basis tend to ovulate longer than the standard four-to-five week period.

Oddly enough dogs going through a false pregnancy will show symptoms of having a real pregnancy. Even behavioral physical and behavioral symptoms. Interestingly enough, her behavior will start displaying that of a mother who is trying to “nest.”

It is extremely important to remember this very part. Females dogs may also experience changes in appetite that will pole into the extremes. And you will need to contact a vet as soon as you can. Look for signs of your dog may deciding to rebel against food or just the opposite eating more than her fare share and these symptoms lasting for days at a time. Morning sickness is also a very common false pregnancy experience. This would be another reason to contact a vet.

Another sign a false pregnancy that your dog may exhibit is that of eating stools. The technical term for stool-eating is called Coprophagy and is normally considered to be caused by some hidden behavioral problem.  However, in relation to a dog experiencing a false pregnancy, it can be her body telling her that she is not getting the proper amount of nutrients that she needs to feed her unborn puppies. Even though she is not truly pregnant, her body is telling her otherwise.

Probably the most interesting aspect of a false pregnancy are the physical changes that occur with the female dog's body. They truly mimic a real pregnancy. For example, she will experience an unusual amount of weight-gain, even if her diet hasn't changed.  Her mammary glands will increase in size and she will start production of milk and colostrum. You may also notice that her pelvic and global area may pulsate – as she swells and relaxes the area.
