Neat Dog Tricks: Invite Him To The Dinner Table!

Thursday, May 17, 2007 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Do you wish you dog could do those amazing tricks you see off of television? Imagine how fulfilling it would be if your dog could do those fun commands, like jumping into his own chair so that he can eat with the rest of the family. Why don't you give it a try?

Why would you want to teach your dog this trick? Well if you love your dogs as much as I do and seeing your beloved dog with those sad little eyes looking right up at you all teared up because they are not sharing in the same meal you are enjoying, then this is one surefire way to solve his yearning and to have him join you at the dinner table.

Some people do not enjoy having their companion to have their own chair and dine with the family, but for those of you that do it will be worth the process. Below is a simple three step training process to teach your dog to do just that:

Step 1: The first thing you need to do is be conscious of safety. When it comes to this dog trick the main safety factor that you need to adhere to is to ensure that the dinner chair which is to be used for your dog to jump into has solid traction. It would be a horrible experience to be trying to train your dog to jump onto a chair they may slide off of and seriously injure themselves. Simply place a thick towel or a rubber placemat on top of the seat. This should do the job just fine.

Step 2: Now here is the easy part. While your dog is in the same room and can smell those luscious aromas of your cooking, enthusiastically pat the top of the chair while beckoning him to come and say the command “Dinner!” “Dinner!” repeatedly. For a dog that is hungry this is all you need to do to get him to hop on the chair.

Step 3: Now use the “Stay” command so that your dog remains seated while you push the chair in. Dogs love to be elevated so it shouldn't be too hard to keep them there and be sure to make this dog trick worth it for him – have a hot plate of food waiting for him at the dinner table!
