Dog Tricks: How To Get Your Dog To Jump Into Your Lap On Command

Thursday, April 26, 2007 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Have you ever noticed that dogs absolutely love to jump into things and on top of them? Why do you think this is? Simply because they are dogs! It's just part of their playful nature. In fact, the real challenge usually comes from trying to get them out from wherever they jumped into. And it is so much fun if you can teach your dog to jump into your lap on command.

Most dogs want to be lap dogs. Except as a dog grows in size it is less likely to stay up on your lap after placing them there. So that is what we're going to teach you today – how to get your dog to jump into your lap whenever you want him to (regardless of his size).

Step 1: First and far most your dog must be able to understand the “stay” command. Even more so to the point where you can place him across the room, walk over to the other side and still have them stay in place.

Step 2: Now get your dog to be on the opposite side of where you are. Ok after this, pat your lap and very enthusiastically say the following three commands “Sparky” - “Come Here” - “Up, Up!” Of course substitute my dog's name for your dog's name and do not expect him to jump into your lap right away. Initially, he will run up in a very excited manner and place both his paws on you.

Step 3: Now, when he finally gets on your lap give them an extreme amount of praise. Pet them, verbalize that what they did was very, very good, and give them their treat or toy that you have for them. After all the excitement has died down, repeat the actions. Start over with leading him across the room and do this at least 10 more times.

Step 4: Do not continue to praise him for just coming up to you and pawing at you once you reach the 10th time. Now it is time to only praise after he comes and crawls into your lap. You will have to help with motivation by scooping him up a little, but eventually he will get the idea and will literally bounce into your lap in order to get the treat.
