Dog Leash Training: Teaching Your Dog The “Let's Go” Command

Monday, April 23, 2007 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Are you willing to make the changes necessary to training your new puppy? When training a new puppy there will be many new situations you will need to become accustom to. Especially when it comes to showing them the basics. In today's article we are going to discuss a simple method that can help you leash train your dog and teach them to obey the “let's go” command.

To be most affective you should start your “lets go” leash training in a relatively quiet area due to the simple fact that new puppies are easily distracted by anything and everything around them. Make sure that there are no cats, dogs, children, or loud noises to minimize distractions. The perfect area would be a private backyard or a quiet sidewalk in front, so long as you have a little bit of privacy.

You will need a just a few simple tools: a leash, a loose fitting collar for your dog's neck, and a squeaky toy that you will use to divert his attention towards you.

Getting your puppy interested in their squeaky toy is your first task.  Play with it and show it to her in a friendly manner while talking to your dog at the same time and asking “what's this”, “pretty toy huh”, or “look what I got” - doing so in a tone of voice that makes your puppy feel comfortable and playful.  Everybody has that “cutesy voice” that like to talk to their pets with, so use yours!

Now after that exercise your dog should be very aware and happy about that squeaky toy. They should be following yours hands and fun noises that follow. To make sure of this divert your puppies attention to anything else then squeeze there toy and if they respond by forgetting the diversion and running excitably back to you, you know you’re on the right track.

Now The Training Begins

To begin the training portion, coil most of the leash in your right hand and stand with your dog at your left. Now, with your left hand hold on to the leash near the collar as well as still keeping hold of the squeaky toy. After all this and you are ready to start moving, say “Lets Go!.”  But ,make sure that your command comes in a very cheerful way and keeps a positive tone.

Your dog should then start moving at your same pace because there is little room for the leash to extend and the fun in a squeaky toy that she loves so much is right near her face, keeping her entertained and wanting to move towards that direction.

Be sure to utilize the simple training procedure for only a few steps at a time.  If you make the mistake of trying to keep your dog walking on the leash after giving the “let's go” command for too far lengths at a time, she will get bored quickly and will stop watching you in the toy, as well as your movements.

Repeat this protocol as often as needed until your dog will follow in your direction without the use of a diversion (the squeaky toy).
